Alternator Problems

For quality service at an affordable price, you can't go wrong with Alternator shop. In-house warranties are available on most products and services.

When performing alternator repairs, the technician must simply pull the damaged or defective part out of the vehicle and replace it with a new one. Most commonly, technicians perform the starter and alternator replacement by removing the old hardware and parts using a socket set and other hand tools. The replacement parts quickly bolt into the engine bay in the exact same position as the old components.

Signs there might be trouble with your truck’s alternator:

  • You notice the interior lights dim or flicker. An alternator supplies a vehicle’s electric needs, so when it starts failing or malfunctioning, functions that need electricity can begin to be affected. Some trucks have alternator lights on the dashboard display that light up if the alternator isn’t giving out enough juice.
  • A dead battery. While not always indicative of a faulty alternator, a dead battery in your truck can be associated with an alternator. When a truck’s alternator stops working at maximum capacity, the battery attempts to pick up some of the slack and batteries are not designed for long-term use.
  • A smell of burning rubber. When a truck’s alternator fails, a scent of burning rubber can sometimes be smelled due to a pulley causing friction on the belt.

If you suspect there is a problem with your truck’s alternator you should take it to be inspected and serviced by a mechanic who is experienced in heavy duty alternators. A mechanic can test the alternator, test how much voltage it’s giving off and let you know if it needs to be replaced.

Investing in a high-quality heavy duty alternator is a wise decision because you want to ensure that your trucks are operating with the best possible parts and that they won’t malfunction, leaving the drivers stranded on the side of the road and your business suffering as a result.

WHAT CAUSES BATTERY FAILURE?

There are a number of reasons why a battery can fail, causing you to rely on your semi truck battery charge or the kindness of strangers more than you should. Here’s a quick look at the most common causes and preventative actions you can take:

  • Improperly Secured Cables: Your truck will more than likely have trouble starting if the battery cables aren’t secured to the terminals. Make checking the battery connections part of your pre-trip inspection.
  • Battery Corrosion: When the battery terminals are exposed to hydrogen gas, which is an ingredient of battery acid, they’ll begin to corrode. This can prevent the battery from charging fully. Small amounts of corrosion are normal and should be cleaned routinely. However, if you notice an excessive amount of corrosion, have the terminals checked for any additional problems.
  • Parasitic Loads: When a device like a radio draws on the battery’s charge but doesn’t replace it, it’s considered a parasitic load. To a certain degree, these are unavoidable, but it’s important to control the frequency of parasitic loads and they’re impact on your truck’s battery. If left unchecked, they’ll continue to reduce the battery’s charge, leaving it undercharged or dead.
  • Alternator Problems: Alternator troubles can cause battery charging issues. Incorrect voltage from the alternator is often the culprit. For this reason, it’s important to check the alternator during regular battery service.
  • Battery Vibration: To avoid vibration, make sure your truck’s battery is in the proper place. If the battery isn’t secured, it’s likely that it won’t function as it should and its components can easily become damaged.
